Book Two in the Magnolia Steele Mystery series by Denise Grover Swank.
For as long as Magnolia Steele can remember, the past has had its hooks in her. Her time as a Broadway actress in New York City was an escape that ended in public humiliation, but now that she’s back home in Franklin, Tennessee, she’s feeling the grip of the two incidents that stole her innocence. The first was the disappearance of her father when she was a teen, who left home for a meeting and never came back. The other incident...well, her memories have returned, but it's best left where it belongs—in the past.
Hoping for closure, Magnolia decides to look into her daddy’s cold case. Though the town gossips are convinced he ran away with his client’s wife and money, she has always suspected foul play. Talking to a few of his old acquaintances seems harmless enough—until the man she’s arranged to meet turns up dead. There’s evidence someone murdered him to keep him quiet, and she realizes that whatever conspiracy her father was mixed up in is far from over; it’s entering its second act.
If Magnolia keeps digging, she's not sure she can trust her own momma to help her, let alone her new friends and the police detective who’s eager to woo her, but after years of running, she’s ready to stand her ground.

Writing this review and not revealing any spoilers is a truly difficult task. I'm going to keep it simple. If you're a fan of Denise Grover Swank's Rose Gardner Mysteries, I'm fairly certain you're going to love the Magnolia Steele Mysteries. Denise has got a doozie of a mystery with Magnolia Steele, and I'm still working those puzzle pieces. Read this series because you're a fan of Denise Grover Swank's work. This book has a little bit of everything: murder, mystery, fun, badass heroines, and a touch of romance. By a "touch" I mean a dash, just the tiniest bit of romance sprinkled here and there. Totes sweet, no steam. What I liked:
1) Magnolia
2) Belinda
3) Detective Brady Bennett (I *really, really, really, really, really, REALLY* didn't want to like him.)
What I didn't like:
1) Roy
2) Whomever the stalker/murderer from Magnolia's past is (I've got a couple of theories still in play after the completion of this installment!)
3) Det Owen Fraiser
4) Ava Milton
Who I don't trust:
1) Everyone in the "didn't like" list.
2) Colt Austin (he's sweet, but I don't trust him.)
3) Franklin police
4) Brady (yes, I like him, but I don't trust him.)
What surprised me:
1) Magnolia finally saying something to Belinda about Roy
2) Roy (holy cannoli!)
3) Magnolia and Colt singing (that's not really a spoiler, is it?)
4) The fast succession of murders (also not really a spoiler, this is a mystery series after all!)
There. I did it. My review in lists. I've been doing a lot of lists lately. Sometimes they make me feel better.

Act Two Magnolia Steele Mystery #2 edition by Denise Grover Swank Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Part two of Denise Grover Swank's new series featuring Magnolia Steele really delivers. The writing remains stellar, the story flows, and the characters develop nicely.
Without giving too much away, Maggie starts looking for answers to the event that sent her running away from home when she was just a teen. She remembers some, to terrifying effect, but simply cannot get a grip on the whole thing. She's not the type to give up, though.
Romance seems to be developing,of course, as do some friendships. One of Swank's great strengths is the interpersonal relationships of her characters. Another other is writing a really involving mystery while still making you laugh. Act Two has both of these going for it, along with an outstanding sense of place and a realistic, revealing, complicated mother-daughter relationship.
I suggest reading Center Stage before Act Two, not because you have to but because you'll want to; nothing spoils a series more than reading book two first!
Denise Grover Swank is nailing it with her Magnolia Steele Series, and you won't regret reading this book, or the series. Go get it!
It's obviously not finished, not over! I'm anxious to know what happens next with Mags, Brady, Colt, Belinda, Owen, Roy, and the mystery killer/carver ! Poor Magnolia, how much more does she have to endure? First she loses her father, then she's held captive and tortured, misjudged, misunderstood, and mistreated by her own mother she leaves her family and hometown to run away from the pain and the fear of everyone of these memories. Just when she thinks she is safe in her new life of acting in New York, which allows her to assume different roles of other people, which takes her away from the realities she has such a problem facing; BOOM! She finds herself thrown right back where it all started In her old hometown, in her old childhood house, in her old bedroom, surrounded by the same old past, including her mean, abusive, brother, Roy! As memories start to come back, murders start to pile up and so do Magnolia's fears! She begins to get anonymous yet terrifying and somewhat threatening texts, she feels as though she can trust no one, not even the police! Her brother, Roy, is still bitter, mean, and abusive, her sister-in-law, Belinda, seeems so meek and sweet, Magnolia just loves and adores her, but still there's that hesitancy to fully trust her. Colt has become a truly faithful friend and very protective, but he too has a past with secrets of his own, so she doesn't feel she can fully trust him either. It's no secret that Owen, Brady's friend on the force, has lied and hid or covered up evidence more than one time that Maggie is aware of and she has tried multiple times to get Brady to see the truth, but for some reason he refuses to believe that Owen is capable of such a thing. Is Owen really clean or is Brady covering for him? Is Brady in on the whole thing? Who is ogers????? When is Mystery #3 going to be available? Soon I hope!
This is the second book in the Magnolia Steele series and it was just as wonderful as the first book. I am blown away with how Denise's characters come to life and unfortunately for some of them in this mystery they don't make it out alive. Magnolia is still working for her mom and still butting heads with her as well. She is working so hard on keeping her cool as whoever keeps sending her those mystery texts has her nervous and shaky but not enough for her to stop the hunt of what happened to her father. Our favorite boys are back in this story the handsome detective, Brady and the playboy Cole give Magnolia run for her money in more ways than one. This story is about learning to trust, who to trust, and when to trust. Another job well done lady! Can't wait for book 3!
